Czechia only recognizes biometric passports of Russian citizens

New rule has been introduced as of July 3, 2024. Since this decision might affect a lot of people, there will be transitional period until September 15, 2024. During this period, the non-biometric passport can be used to enter the country and for long-term residence permit applications

What does it mean

The non-biometric passports are no longer accepted by Czech authorities;
Visas can newly be issued only in biometric passports, no matter when the visa application has been lodged.

Who will it affect

All Russian citizens traveling or residing in the Czech Republic except for children under 15 years old, participants of the “Občanská společnost” program and holders of visas of permits granted in the interest of the Czech Republic.

If you are long-term resident of Czech Republic (have long-term visa, long-term permit, permanent residence, temporary residence of the EU family member)

You are required to obtain biometric passport, even as a Russian citizen residing in the Czech Republic. If you do not manage to obtain your biometric passport until September 15, 2024, you may be fined if you use your Russian non-biometric passport.
After you get your new biometric passport, do not forget that you are required to notify the Ministry of Interior of your new passport.

If you are currently applying for or renewing residence permit (long-term visa, long-term residence, temporary residence of the EU family member)

In case your application will not be approved by September 15, 2024 (inc. the biometric appointment and pick up), you will need to submit new biometric passport.
The Ministry of Interior will send you official letter asking for biometric passport to be submitted and will give time to do so.
Without the new passport, your application might be denied.

If you need a bridging visa sticker

Only until September 15, 2024, can bridging visa sticker be issued in non-biometric passport and can be used to return to the Czech Republic together with the non-biometric passport.
After this date, you might be denied entry to the country if you use bridging visa sticker and non-biometric passport.
