End of Passport Stamps? The Launch of the New Entry/Exit System (EES) is Approaching!

The Entry/Exit System (EES) is expected to be launched by the end of 2024. This system will replace manual passport stamping with a digital process that will significantly simplify and speed up border crossings.
The main advantage of EES is that it will provide third-country nationals with an overview of their allowed stay, whether they are traveling using their visa-free days or on a Schengen visa. The remaining days of their stay will be available to be checked online, making it easier to avoid unintentionally overstaying the allowed period.
🔹 Who will the new system apply to?
Travelers who are not citizens of the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, nor Switzerland.
🔹 What types of stays will EES cover?
Stays under short-term visas and visa-free stays will be monitored, which means stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period.
🔹 Who will be exempt from the EES?
EU citizens, including Cyprus and Ireland.
Family members of EU citizens who hold a residence permit.
Holders of long-term residence permits or long-term visas.
Other specific groups.
🔹 How will the EES work in practice?
During your first border check, you will register in the EES system – your fingerprints will be taken, and a photograph will be captured.
For future trips, your data will already be in the system. If traveling with a biometric passport, you will go through an automated check without needing to present your passport physically.
🔹 When will the system be launched?
The EES is expected to be operational in the Czech Republic by the end of 2024.
The European Union expects the new system to improve tracking and control of overstays, reduce the use of fraudulent documents, and enhance information sharing between member states.
